In reality the user documentation is an unloved child of software developers, often postponed to the end of the project, containing often just a pure description of forms and input fields. Users are then frustrated when they don´t find any answers to their specific questions.

User documentation is a must for software products, even from a legal point of view. It may be done in very different manners, depending on the project type and the customer's level of knowledge.

System documentation is compiled from many different documentation elements (conceptual system description, database documentation, source code documentation, ...).

All of these parts are important to achieve a long-time protection of investments for the developed system. Otherwise the knowledge about system relations and technical details will be lost over time and the exit of involved employees can leave large knowledge gaps.
